Tom Hanks is uiteraard een topacteur, maar kan de plank soms flink misslaan met kluchtige typetjes. Zo ook in dit zwartkomische feelgooddrama, waarin hij een knorrige weduwnaar speelt die wel erg veel wegheeft van Ebenezer Scrooge. Deze Otto is bot, ziekelijk pietluttig en soms ronduit agressief, toch blijven zijn engelachtige buurtgenoten aldoor het goede in hem zien. Hollywoodbewerking van de internationale bestseller van Fredrik Backman (die in 2015 al een iets betere Zweedse film opleverde) heeft best wat mooie momenten, maar mist op alle fronten subtiliteit.

A Man Called Otto is gebaseerd op de komische en ontroerende New York Times-bestseller en vertelt het verhaal van Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), een norse weduwnaar met vastgeroeste gewoonten. Wanneer er een druk jong gezin naast hem komt wonen, krijgt hij te maken met de goedgebekte en hoogzwangere Marisol. Uiteindelijk ontstaat er een wonderlijke vriendschap die Otto’s leven op zijn kop zet.
